Bending capacity depends on several factors, including the type of material being processed, its thickness, the bend length, the die opening width, and the machine’s tonnage capacity, amongst others. The standard formula is: Required tonnage ≈ (65 × material thickness² × bend length) ÷ V-die opening. You can estimate this based on your bending requirements; if you are unsure, please contact our technical team for confirmation.

A 40-tonne press brake is typically best suited for bending thin to medium-thickness sheet metal, with specific thicknesses usually ranging from 0.5 mm to 6 mm.

Additionally, the type of material must be taken into account; for example, at the same thickness, stainless steel generally requires greater bending force than low-carbon steel. When using V-die dies, a 40-tonne press brake can reliably bend 4.5 mm low-carbon steel, 3 mm stainless steel or 5 mm aluminium.

A 40-tonne hydraulic press brake consumes an average of approximately 4.5 kilowatts per hour, whilst a fully electric servo model consumes approximately 1 kWh under standard operating conditions—representing a saving of approximately 70–80% in energy consumption compared to a hydraulic drive system. If you primarily process small parts, electrical enclosures, decorative panels, or precision components, a 40-tonne CNC press brake is usually a more suitable choice than larger-tonnage models.

Many factors affect angle consistency, such as variations in material thickness, sheet hardness, die wear, backgauge positioning accuracy, machine rigidity, and so on. In batch production, it is recommended that you select suitable dies and bending parameter settings for different materials and carry out regular maintenance on key components to achieve stable and consistent batch bending. Fully electric servo press brakes utilise servo motors and ball screws, replacing the hydraulic system. Compared to hydraulic press brakes, they typically do not require replacement of hydraulic components and offer the advantages of lower energy consumption, quieter operation, and simpler maintenance. Hydraulic press brakes are better suited to heavy-duty bending tasks and more flexible tonnage requirements.

We recommend that you carry out regular monthly inspections to check the dies for wear, cracks, or deformation. If any issues are found, replace them promptly to prevent bending angles from deviating from the tolerance range and to avoid inaccurate bending. Under normal usage conditions, die lifespan varies depending on material hardness and production frequency; however, prolonged processing of high-strength materials may reduce the service life of the dies to as little as one year.

Regular inspection items typically include die wear, lubrication of the guideways and ball screws on fully electric servo press brakes, electrical connections, backgauge alignment, the condition of the servo system, and the condition of the hydraulic oil on hydraulic press brakes, amongst others. Effective preventive maintenance helps to minimise the occurrence of accidents and ensures the long-term, stable bending performance of the press brake.

Most 40-tonne hydraulic press brakes require a three-phase 380V–480V power supply, with a main motor power of 5–9 kW. A few compact electric servo models support single-phase 220V or 240V power supplies; we recommend that you confirm local voltage requirements with our technical team before placing an order.
